Expectations:

CHEM 1201 is a General Education course in the Natural Sciences area, physical science subdivision.  Successful students will demonstrate problem-solving skills and knowledge of the basic theories of chemistry and its underlying principles.  You should spend a minimum of six hours per week outside of class working on assignments for this class.

 

 

Required Text:

Chemistry: The Central Science, Brown, LeMay, and Bursten, any  edition.

 

 

Structure:

This course will cover the material found in the first 13 chapters of the text except Chapters 5 and 12.  You will take a mandatory 15-problem, 12-point, in-class quiz periodically.  Mandatory online homework problems are worth 0.1 points each.  All quizzes are written in 5-answer multiple-choice format.  No in-class makeup quizzes will be given without written documentation of unavoidable (ie. emergency) circumstances. .  Makeup quizzes must be taken within 2 weeks after missed quiz and will be NOT given after April 25 (FINISHED by 4:30 PM).  Mandatory internet homeworks may be submitted in advance of their deadlines (deadlines are online with the assignments), but will not be accepted late regardless of circumstances.  A comprehensive group final exam will be worth 40 points.  The final exam location will be posted online one week prior to the exam on my website.

40 points maximum

 

Course Total:

100 points

 

You should attempt to earn 80.0 points doing in-class quizzes and online homework to maximize your prefinal grades but only the first 60 of these points will count toward your final grade. The maximum score for the final exam is 40 points even after a curve is added in.  Final grading will be assigned as follows:
